PANEL DISCUSSION IN ROLE OF SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATION IN SOCIAL INCLUSION

The panel discussion focused on the role of social service organizations in promoting social inclusion was conducted in the Zone Conference North Zone I on Sunday, 27th March,2016 at CSOI Club New Delhi.

Inputs were gained from following eminent people who are stalwarts in the field of social sector – right from formulating social intervention strategies to their implementation, constant monitoring and developing frameworks that would enable social sector organizations to help in inclusive development.

  • Sh. K. Narayan Managing Director Backward Classes Finance and Development Corporation as Chairperson
  • Sh. Bala Phani Kumar Head of Government Social Initiatives at Apollo Mediskills
  • Ms. Vanita Ahuja Assistant Professor RISC School of Build Envoirement
  • Ms. Shradha Bhandari Moderator

The discussion focused on 4 major aspects:

  • The evolution of the concept of social sector intervention, including via the notion of Corporate social responsibility
  • Need to formulate targeted intervention strategies that respond to needs and priorities of communities, are time bound and within the stipulated cost and are based on constant stakeholder communication.
  • The policy guidelines and schemes already developed by the central and state governments that can be tapped into by social sector organizations for ensuring a more inclusive and larger reach.
  • Practical examples of what has worked, e.g. in the healthcare sector with skill development programs for health workers’ required for providing support to old people, young children and those in need. Aspects of how to reach the most excluded strata of society through meticulous project planning and implementation were also discussed.

There was a general consensus that for social sector organizations to partner in the social development of the country via their services, the focus has to shift from charity to empowering communities to sustain the momentum of change. For this it was highlighted that the loop of long term selection of 2-3 focal areas based on needs assessment, clear project planning, stakeholder communication and feedback and monitoring and corrective action has to be completed for any initiatives. Mahavir International was highlighted as one of the social sector organizations with the ‘right heart and dedicated core’ and required just a clear strategy and vision for better working under the changed era of CSR-SSO-Social inclusion.
